Our Commitment

The Emerging Writers’ Festival recognizes that running a festival has a direct impact on the environment and First Nations people’s land. We are committed to actively reduce this impact as much as possible by encouraging EWF staff, artists, partner venues and audience members to undertake sustainable practices while engaging with the festival.  We acknowledge the leadership and guidance of First Nations peoples. Sharing their diverse stories of climate justice and climate action. In solidarity, we stand up for systematic and cultural change within the literature community in so called Australia.

We understand that public transport is not an option for everyone, but where possible we recommend the use of public transport, bike or household carpool when attending events.

We offer E-ticketing to all events to reduce the number of printed tickets. This service is made possible with the support from Ferve Tickets.

We discourage single-use plastic in festival venues and encourage the use of reusable water bottles. We support the state governments waste free management scheme. We encourage everyone to correctly dispose their waste and reduce litter.

We encourage patrons joining online events to monitor ways to save power and reduce the use of multiple devices. Creating online events helps reduce power usage at in-person events, especially in the evening.

Where air travel is necessary for artists and staff, EWF purchases carbon offset units to reduce the impact of greenhouse gases released as a result of mass air travel. Offset units support projects that mitigate emissions from the atmosphere, such as community led renewable energy, energy efficiency and reforestation.

The Emerging Writers’ Festival uses ethical suppliers with a focus on recycled practices. Where possible, festival materials are reused from previous years. This year, EWF will be utilising the QR Code system to avoid bulk printing during the festival.

The Emerging Writers Festival continues to have shared talks with community on future to help us strive towards more sustainable festival.
